At times Diabetic neuropathy can be quite painful. There are various drugs available in the market to help relieve this pain. One such drug is ‘Tramadol’ developed by the pharmaceutical company Grunentha in 2007. It is a synthetic pain analgesic (pain reliever). The exact functioning of tramadol is still unknown but results have shown that it is quite similar to morphine. It has been seen that to provide the best pain reliever, the treatment of neuropathic pain requires use of more than one medication with different mechanisms of action.

This is where tramadol proves to be very effective because of its multiple mechanisms of action in this dual medicational effect. Various studies have shown that tramadol provides long term relief from the pain of diabetic neuropathy.

The side effects of tramadol are transient in nature and commonly include dizziness nausea, constipation, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, and vomiting. Some other less commonly reported side effects includes dry mouth, itching, sweating, diarrhea, rash, visual disturbances, and vertigo. The advantage that tramadol carries over other drugs is that it is not a nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID), and so it does not carry the risk of internal bleeding and stomach ulceration.

Though these drugs have helped a lot in curing these chronic diseases but still we foresee a lot of development. It is better to have balanced diet, proper meal planning, controlling weight, maintaining normal blood sugar level, and doing physical activities then to fell prey to diabetic neuropathy.
